Why I wrote this book
My decision to write this book is the result of too many hours "talking and hurting" alongside Kristin's mom. Denise once told me that she hardly cries anymore...she has long ago cried all her tears out and she is just numb inside. It is a rare event in the Smart household when the phone rings and it is the San Luis Obispo sheriff with any news or developments. The cards and letters have mostly stopped and the media has moved on as well.
Why let these people just "get away with it"? A young beautiful woman is killed and her body is discarded somewhere in or around San Luis Obispo, Ca., and somehow we are supposed to just accept this horrible piece of news and move on?
No.
Many of you know the basic story of Kristin. I want to take you deeper. I have spent so much time with Kristin's mom that I know I have a powerful story to tell. Yes, you will get the facts in this case and the theories as well. Beyond that however, I will focus in on bringing you the poignant moments that will make you feel like you personally know Kristin's mom.
I plan on posting at least two chapters each week and will remain as faithful to Kristin as I possibly can. I don't pretend to know all of the facts in this case and I certainly am not on the investigators "speed dial",: but Kristin's mom and dad know my cellphone and email by heart and I do have this perspective to offer..
To the following people, I wish to say "thank you." If it weren't for you, I would not be doing what I need to be doing with my life.
