Here is yet another example of emails sent to me regarding the search for Kristin. I have edited out any personal information to keep the writer's identity protected from the Flores. As always, I have already sent this to the Smart's.
Dear Mr. Mahon,
I read the article about you in the Tribune in May and resolved to
read your website. However, I just didn't seem to get around to it until today. I have to admit that I didn't know very much about the Smart case other than Paul Flores being the last person with Kristen and how he refused to aid the police. It seemed to me at the time (when I was a high school junior) that if they had the guy, eventually they would be able to find some evidence to prove him guilty.
As I read all the articles on your site and on another site, www.providingangel.com, I was shocked.
In late 1998, I was dating my boyfriend and we had driven into Arroyo Grande. He was taking me to lunch at the Klondike pizza place and we couldn't find a parking place so we had to drive all the way through the village up to the Huasna/Hwy 227 intersection. On the way to the stop sign (if it still is a stop sign..I haven't been there in quite some time), 1995 until after October 1996.
He asked me if I remembered the girl who had disappeared from CalPoly a couple years earlier and after I said yes, he pointed to the blue house and informed me that house was owned by the parents of the guy who was seen with her last.
Then he told me that he was absolutely sure Kristin was buried in the backyard because of events he had seen late one night... he said he saw two men carrying what looked like some sort of thick, rolled up rug into the backyard area.
He also said that he, his ex-girlfriend, and his ex-girlfriends father ... I am unsure what his believed they were doing some sort of landscaping project during the same time frame.
Very soon after he saw the two men with whatever it was they were actually carrying ( a day or two), the people working on the "project" had poured what appeared to be a concrete slab. I cant recall clearly if he said he was told it was for a new dumpster for the house or if a dumpster had, in fact, been placed on the concrete.
After we had turned around on Huasna road and were driving back into the town proper, I saw the billboard with Kristin Smarts' photo in front of Mr. Murphys' office and a sign asking people to call a phone number with any information about Kristin. I asked my ex-husband if he had ever called the number; he said he had placed one anonymous phone call but it seemed as if everyone was focusing more on other places she could be.
I agree with the person who said the house on East Branch ought to be purchased from Mrs. Flores, especially if that is what it will take to pry that concrete out of the ground to see if anything is underneath. If a handyman can figure out a way to layer materials so that an x-ray cannot read what's underneath them, I'm sure the Flores family could have found a way also.
But, I don't think her refusing to sell would be an admission of what that house could be harboring. I think by this point it would only be an attempt to hurt the Smart family. Her illusions of what a nice normal family they are shattered and instead of helping to heal some of the damage, she would rather inflict some of the anger, shame and guilt she must feel on the people who wont stop drawing attention to the source of her shame.
I hope this adds a little bit of "fresh paint" to the picture, Mr. Mahon. I sincerely hope that everyone who knows anything will come forward and though it looks unlikely at the moment, I wish Paul would grow tired of running and help Mr and Mrs Smart get the closure they need.
